8d2f66faa6 First attempt at handling missed optimization cascades. 
Currently, if missed optimizations a and b are of the same kind, a is caused
by b, and b is caused by c, we merge them into a single miss with cause c.

This works in some cases, but fails in others.

56423f330e `procedure-arity-includes?' reports #f for keyword-requiring procs 
by default; a new optional argument restores the old behavior
  (but the default behavior is consistent with the old docs and with
  the vast majority of existing uses)

 The implementation is ugly for performance reasons. A new primitive
  `prop:arity-incomplete' property determines when to return #f for
  `procedure-arity-includes?' in default mode. A nicer implementation
  would be to redefine `procedure-arity-includes?' at the kw-proc level,
  but the bytecode optimizer's and JIT's treatment of the built-in
  `procedure-arity-includes?' is important. The implementation choice
  could be revisited after cross-module inlining is implemented.

be84425bd0 Rewrite compose' and add compose1'. 
The new version fixes some problems with the previous one, most notably
it can create a keyworded function when the last input is is keyworded.
`compose1' is a restricted variant that requires single values in the
composed pipeline -- besides being potentially faster (probably more
if/when there is cross module inlining), it has a semantical
justification, similar to the restricting function call arguments to
return single values, with similar robustness benefits.  The
implementation of both is done in a generalized way, and the results can
be faster for both `compose' and `compose1'.  (Not by much -- 20% and
30% resp.)

One thing that it could do is to reduce the resulting arity to match the
last given function.  I didn't do this since it adds a significant
overhead to the result.  (No strong opinion on doing that...)

17b6ffa731 Move thunk' from unstable/function' into `racket/function'. 
Actually, the new `thunk' is a nullary function, which I think is very
popular expectation for the name.  Since there are possible uses for the
any-arity version, it's added too, as `thunk*'.

bb792c977d the tabber incorrectly counted tab chars as spaces when doing indentation; 
this meant that if some line were supposed to be indented in the third
  column and you had two tabs and a space on that line, the indenter
  would leave it alone. Now, if it sees tabs in the line anywhere, it just
  decides that the line is not properly indented and re-indents it
  (always using spaces)

Also: started a tabber test suite

af57e0419c Fixes PR11793. 
It was very hard to figure out why &#0; is invalid. Both the XML 1.0 and 1.1 specs say that a CharRef can be '&#' [0-9]+ ';' (sec 4.1), but there is a note on the side that it must also be a valid Char. The Char definition (sec 2.2) then lays out which characters are valid. (The 1.0 and 1.1 specs disagree though.) I've gone with the 1.1 definition.

I did not update the rest of the reader to disallow those characters in pcdata segments. If this hurts you or you morally disagree, submit another PR, please.

80a9027f1e Take the meet of constraints earlier in the inference process. 
This avoids constraint explosions in some cases, notably when working
with polydots and plain variable arity functions at the same time.

However, this also weakens inference a bit (breaks it for
unholy-terror and related tests), but not in a way that affects any
practical use cases that I know of.

22afec432c Use "127.0.0.1" instead of "localhost" which can be more fragile.

0fce29f552 adjust the wxme reader so that it now creates image-snip%s when it finds image-snips in file 
it used to create image% objects that were simple containers for the
  data in the file; the change _should_ be backwards compatibile;
  the only know incompatibility is that the get-filename method
  now returns a path instead of bytes (this is to match the
  image-snip% class)

e56663c943 Add a predicate field to base types, which makes checking for 
subtyping of value types easier.

However, this means that base types can't be marshaled as before,
since these predicates can't be marshaled. Instead, we now marshal
base types as identifiers that refer to their base type object.

d4c93cc12e TR's numeric tower is now built from unions of non-overlapping base types. 
A lot of the work that was done by special-casing number types can now be
done by TR's handling of unions. This makes it easier to add more numeric
types to the tower and should make writing down types for numeric
primitives much less error-prone.

In addition, this commit adds several numeric types that will help get
tighter bounds on integer arithmetic, such as Index types. They will have
to be integrated to the base environment before they can be useful.

cfa7b727f4 Fix some errors with in-vector and derived forms: 
- Range checking was inconsistent between the sequence and macro forms
- The macro form could crash due to unsafe vector refs

Fixes involved refactoring the range checks so they are shared between both versions, and changing the contract slightly so start and stop are checked before the sequence runs. This allows unsafe vector refs and earlier error notifications at the cost making some valid programs (e.g. those using some condition to stop a comprehension hitting an invalid index) now be invalid. Only crazy people would rely on the old behaviour, so it isn't a problem in practice.

Also remove the old tests for tail-call behavior with ->d.
I think it was a faulty way of doing the optimization, and we can't even
do it in the same way now, since we can't get the original "raw" arguments
to the right place via continuation marks.

->i has a much better chance of having this optimization where possible,
and when I start converting ->i, I'll make sure to add appropriate tests.

84f3cb115b Add proxies for -> and ->*. 
Attempt to do a recently intelligent job by using more specific lambdas
when possible (i.e., when the arity of the function matches the arity
specified by the contract).

Also, change testcases that test creation of proxy contracts to stop
depending on the proxy-ness of -> contracts.  This also uncovered a bug
in the testcase that checks that proxy contracts aren't allowed for
the domain in hash/c.

3325350026 At Robby's request, remove the check for proxy-of?. 
Due to the bad interaction between procedure-rename and getting the
contract info from the proxy/chaperone, this will cause a failure in
the contract test cases.  I'm submitting a bug report for that issue.

c6fc7137ee Adjusts the contract system so that it preserves the names of functions. 
closes PR 11220

Altho, this does not fix the case where a function is being passed thru
another contracted function. Eg, when you give the identity function
this contract: (-> (-> integer? integer?) (-> integer? integer?))
if you pass some function with a name in there, it won't come
back with a name anymore (indeed, it won't even have the name
anymore in the body of the function).

For that, the fix would have to be put into each of the function
contract combinators.

[It will not bother me if we revert this commit. I liked SK's idea and found it easy to implement. I wonder if others will be worried that it is easy to unintentionally leave off the second argument to check-error. I also wonder if it is problematic to add new string constants, like I've done.]

Here is an example:

994ad6d10f Now change box/c to use proxies or chaperones appropriately. 
Create a mzlib/contract compatible version of the old box/c and use that
for mzlib/contract.  Change the docs so that the docs for mzlib/contract
contain the right information.

Fix the typed-scheme implementation to only force flat box (or hash)
contracts when it already is required to be flat.  Otherwise, allow
non-flat contracts for the element contract (or domain/range contracts).

Now use for/fold to thread the index through the iteration form, so
that all variants can take advantage of the optional #:length
argument.  Previously, only the for/vector and for/flvector used the

changed: iteration stops when either the vector is full, or the
requested number of iterations has been achieved, whichever comes
first.  If #:length is larger than the number of iterations performed,
then the remaining slots in the vector are filled with the default

3d016150a3 Updates to for/vector, for/flvector forms and documentation. 
- Now the faster forms take a #:length keyword to designate the length
  of the vector to pre-allocate.

- The for/[fl]vector forms take multiple body expressions and set the
  vector component to the value of the last one.

- When given a #:length argument, the for/vector and for/flvector
  forms check that the iteration is not exceeding the given length,
  raising exn:fail if it does.

- Test cases for the multiple body expressions and the exception for
  excessive iterations have been added.

- Doc modifications to bring the docs in line with the new forms.

- Doc modifications to note that the #:length versions of the form
*may* all the computation to be performed more efficiently, and
stating that it "is an error" if the given length-expr does not
produce a valid length for a vector that matches the number of
iterations for the loop.

- Note that no test is made for a number of loop iterations that is
  smaller than the given vector length.  Also, the for*/[fl]vector
  forms do not optimize when given a #:length argument.  These are
  areas for future improvement.

7fb1b41a28 The optimizer's test harness now makes sure that optimized and 
non-optimized versions of the same code evaluate to the same thing.

Unfortunately, this leads to a lot of code duplication. We can't
abstract over optimization like we do for the benchmarks since the
wrapper module would interfere with testing expanded code for
equality.

0eeb18f4d8 Improve the bytecode optimizer's ability to simplify `letrec's 
to smaller `letrec' groups or even `let*'.
 The goal of the change is to avoid performance surprises
 when using internal definitions, especially when mixing
 experessions with definitions.
 It's a somewhat scary change. Besides the new transformation,
 the optimizer pass's coordinate system for `letrec' (and sometimes
 `let*') bindings changed.
 No standard benchmarks were harmed during the making of this
 optimization. (None were improved, either.)

In addition, cleaned up the documentation a little, and mention the fact
that it is not thread safe.

96006264ad Some improved shootout benchmarks. 
* An improved version of the `fasta' benchmark: ~2.5 times faster, and
  if an inlined `unsafe-fl->fx' is added it is probably going to be
  about ~3.5 times faster.

* `reversecomplement' -- revised code that is ~2.5 times faster, further
  tweaks and unsafe ops gets it to ~4.5 times.

* Doing the structs differently in `binarytrees' and a few minor tweaks
  get it to be ~1.5 times faster.  This is probably because a leaf has
  now only one field.

* `mandelbrot' improved a little (~1.2x), but the code is pretty much a
  rewrite.  (Given some more flonum inlining it can probably do much
  better.)

* Added a comment to `pidigits-gmp' saying that it was used without
  attribution.

These versions use unsafe operations, but I'm not putting them in
separate files since it's easy to turn them off.  I've also removed
"mandelbrot-unsafe.rkt", since it was identical to the safe version.

99bb46d225 Fix flat immutable container ctcs so that errors pinpoint specific elements. 
* Fixes immutable container contract combinators so that, if given flat
   contracts, they report blame errors in terms of the specific element
   that failed, instead of reporting the entire container as failing.

   This fixes issues seen with contracts such as (listof string?), where
   the contract is applied to a list with far too many elements to print
   all at once and the failing element is never printed.

 * Fixes vector-immutable/c so that if all the element contracts are flat,
   we create a flat contract, like the other immutable container contract
   combinators.

 * Also have more appropriate first-order checks for each combinator
   than just "Is it the right type of container?".

* Added `delay/strict', mostly for the below.

* Made srfi/45 reprovide it as `eager'.

* Also restricted the exports from srfi/45 to its interface.

581cbb461b Change `generator' to have a form of (generator () body ...). The empty 
place will have initial input names, so having this first will make
existing code break with an easy to fix syntax error, rather than having
confusing failures.  (Also made it throw a very clear error message if
there is no () now.)

1bd29dd7e9 Okay, we're going to add back init contracts, which I'd somewhat done before. 
In this version, we're not going to have any reasonable first-order checks as
to whether or not the class actually accepts the initialization arguments that
are being contracted.  I'm also just going to handle by-name at first, since
that's all I originally discussed in the paper.

5cc68fdd0f In some ways, I'm still trying to decide exactly what some of these forms mean. 
For example, if we're in the java part of a beta-java chain, can we still add
an inner contract?  If so, it should affect each java-style overriding method
until we reach the next beta-style augmenting method.

It can just be confusing, because one might thing that inner in a
contract => needs an augmenting method in the subclass, super => needs
an overriding method in the subclass.  The latter is true, since only
the next immediate method can reach the super class's implementation,
but inner jumps to the next augmenting method, so the former isn't
necessarily true.

505034ea26 The generator function can now be used to send values to the generator. 
For example,

  (define g (generator (yield (yield (yield 1)))))
  (list (g) (g 2) (g 3) (g 4) (g) (g))

evaluates to '(1 2 3 4 4 4).  This is something that Python does (as a
generator.send method), which might be useful for using generators as
co-routines, and it is actually easy to implement since sending values
is exactly what we get when the generator call is actually calling the
saved continuation.  So most of the change is dealing with the
technicalities of throwing an error when the generator is called with
some arguments, when that's done after it's terminated (at the stage
where it's repeating the last value for ever).

A few tests added for this.
